Knock.
And today, I had a serendipitous moment at group.
To perhaps help me recall this moment, I shall first record the meaning of "serendipitous", which is, occurring or discovered by chance in a happy or beneficial way.
And so, Mr K decided to play a word game which I thought was brilliant.
U list down categories such as: girl's name; boy's name; country; city. And then an alphabet is randomly chosen. You then list down words in each category which starts with that selected alphabet.
So, she wrote, "Huirong", for girl's name starting with "H".
The joy i felt, gosh. It made all these six weeks worthwhile.
Thank you, Lord.
You always know exactly what fills my heart.
Thank you.

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental
To reach out to others is to risk involvement
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self
To place your ideas, your dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss
To love is to risk not being loved in return
To live is to risk dying
To hope is to risk despair
To try is to risk failure
But risks must be taken,
because the largest hazard in life is to do nothing.
He may avoid suffering and sorrow,
but he cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live.
Chained by his attitudes, he is a slave.,
he forfeited his freedom.
Only the person who risks can be free.
-Author unknown-
i've appeared as a fool.
i get sentimental.
i get involved.
i get exposed.
i've lost.
i've been loved.
i know i'd die.
i've felt despair.
i've failed.
sometimes i do nothing.
i have more than nothing.
i've been taught.
i've felt.
i've changed.
i've grew.
i love.
i live.
i'm a slave to God.
i'm free.
pak choys gave up on me today. but the plants under the stairs grew taller n there were moremoremoremore leaves to shield the plants from the rain. the one most exposed to the beatings of the weather is still flourishing.

The little prince also pulled up, with a certain sense of dejection, the last little shoots of the baobabs. He believed that he would never want to return. But on this last morning all these familiar tasks seemed very precious to him. And when he watered the flower for the last time, and prepared to place her under the shelter of her glass globe, he realised that he was very close to tears.
"Goodbye," he said to the flower.
But she made no answer.
"Goodbye," he said again.
The flower coughed. But it was not because she had a cold.
"I have been silly," she said to him, at last. "I ask your forgiveness. Try to be happy..."
He was surprised by this absence of reproaches. He stood there all bewildered, the glass globe held arrested in mid-air. He did not understand this quiet sweetness.
"Of course I love you," the flower said to him. "It is my fault that you have not known it all the while. That is of no importance. But you-- you have been just as foolish as I. Try to be happy... let the glass globe be. I don't want it any more."
"But the wind--"
"My cold is not so bad as all that... the cool night air will do me good. I am a flower."
"But the animals--"
"Well, I must endure the presence of two or three caterpillars if I wish to become acquainted with the butterflies. It seems that they are very beautiful. And if not the butterflies-- and the caterpillars-- who will call upon me? You will be far away... as for the large animals-- I am not at all afraid of any of them. I have my claws."
And, naively, she showed her four thorns. Then she added: "Don't linger like this. You have decided to go away. Now go!"

Knock.
So my last entry was 13 Sep 2013. Almost 2 years ago. Days pass fast. In a flash, while waiting for no one. The world moves regardless of what happens to anyone. This can feel tragic to people who are pausing and not moving ahead. But it can also bring hope to those who are suffering at one point, to know that the suffering is not permanent and there would be an end.
And so, I was inspired to write today because my best friend in Melbourne, found the parcel that went missing for more than 6 weeks. Her birthday was in the first week of April and I was 2 weeks late in delivering her present. Still, by the end of May, I did not hear a thing from her. The dear dame went to the post office twice and did not recover anything.
Aha, a miracle happened and it still landed at her doorstep somehow. After almost 2 months. This is exhilarating considering that we had thought it was lost permanently. And it is extra special because I also recently found a watch that my bro bought from Germany for me. I thought it was lost forever but I found it after a prayer.
I thought that God must be wanting to speak to me either regarding lost & found or simply, prayer.
Prayer is important to me these days with the setbacks that some of my friends are experiencing. I have been praying for healing from mental health, miscarriages, closed wombs, grief and wisdom. Prayer is the key to opening the gate of hope. To know that someone bigger is watching over everything happening in this mortal space and willing to listen to us.
With regards to lost & found, I realised that the owners to losses in the bible, look frantically. It does not seem to describe me because I seldom commit much time and effort to searching for the lost. Maybe I never lost something that meant the world to me before. Or maybe I just learned that if it is lost so easily, maybe it was not worth the keep afterall.
Be a good keeper, I pray.

knock.
apparently, on 27 Jan 2010, I wrote a post with the same title.
I really couldnt remember what it was then that i was hoping to start over... these were my exact words.
========================================================================
starting over
reclaim the innocence.
it's the end where I begin.
HE writes the script and I improvise too much.
someone reminded me that I am like her. to go my own way and suffer... and refuse to let God help. silly.
how can God be so patient and relentless?
========================================================================
Coincidentally, this year's IDMC theme was “Starting Over, Rediscovering Discipleship as a Redemptive Journey.”
The outline was based on these phrases:
Starting Over
Breaking Free
Looking Up
Letting Go
Drawing Near
Staying True
Moving On
There are many points in life where we would go through the cycle over and over again. I guess this is a norm of life, to constantly rediscover how we need the redeeming power of God and choosing to start over.
I have been reading through the entire bible again. Currently at the book of 1 Samuel and I decided to go deeper by doing a comparison and contrast of Saul and David by creating a table. It has caused me to re-read and look at these characters in greater detail, which is awesome, since i have not been mugging the Word for eons. Looking forward to the riches and blessings through spending more time delving deeper.
On another note...
Today i met with old friends. Meeting with old friends can bring about different thoughts and emotions. There are some whom you would feel glad that you continue to share a strong bond with; there are some whom have drifted so far, you would not mind if paths did not cross again; there are some whom you wish did not go where they are at now.
I think the third kind of feeling applied tonight.
At this point, there are many who have gone in varying paths in their walks with God. I can sense disappointment with God's people. Afterall, I have been both - the one who disappointed and who has been disappointed. In His mercy and grace, I pray that regardless of how i have failed others and how others have failed me, I continue to hang onto the Faithful One who does not change.
To those who have decided to label the Church as only a building and a human construct of "holy fellowship"... pls dont ever let the imperfect human hinder the perfect work that God could do through His body.
While walking home, I was thinking about the statement that a friend had made about the Church being a human construct. No doubt that this friend has been hurt by her encounters and experience. Relating the Church to a family where everyone has his/her quirks, I was trying to imagine families who gather every weekend, granny, grand-dad, uncles, aunties, cousins and all.
Not everyone agrees with one another but the families gather week after week, festival after festival, because they care about the patriarch and the matriarch. It is out of the respect for the head of the family that everyone congregates because everyone understands that the ones who hurt the greatest if anyone is absent, are the granny and grand-dad who have slogged their entire lives to provide for and keep the family together.
Oh Lord, may we see You for who You are and not what Your fallen people have made You to be.

Gleanings from "The Wounded Healer", Henri Nouwen.
In this section, Henri Nouwen shared precious nuggets on the roles that ask for special attention in a world of the rootless generation.
1. The minister as the articulator of inner events
...
The key word here is "articulation." Those who can articulate the movements of their inner lives, who can give names to their varied experiences, need no longer be victims of themselves, but are able slowly and consistently to remove the obstacles that prevent the spirit from entering. They are able to create space for the Spirit whose heart is greater than their own, whose eyes see more than their own, and whose hand can heal more than their own.
This articulation, I believe, is the basis for a spiritual leadership of the future, because only those who are able to articulate their own experiences can offer themselves to others as sources of clarifications. Christian leaders are, therefore, first of all, those who are willing to put their own articulated faith at the disposal of those who ask for help. In this sense they are servants of servants, because they are the first to enter the promised but dangerous land, the first to tell those who are afraid what they themselves have seen, heard, and touched.
...
So the first and most basic task of contemporary Christian leader is to lead people out of the land of confusion into the land of hope. Therefore they must first have the courage to be explorers of the new territory within themselves and to articulate their discoveries as a service to the inward generations.
2. Compassion
By speaking about articulation as a form of leadership, we have already suggested the place where the future leader will stand. Not "up there", far away or secretly hidden, but in the midst of people, with the utmost visibility.
...
Compassion must be the core, and even the nature, of authority. Christian leaders are people of God only insofar as they are able to make the compassion of God with humanity - which is visible in Jesus Christ - credible in their own world.
Compassionate leaders stand in the midst of their people but do not get caught in the conformist forces of the peer group, because through their compassion they are able to avoid the distance of pity as well as the exclusiveness of sympathy. Compassion is born when we discover in the centre of our own existence, not only that God is God and humans are humans, but also that our neighbor really is our fellow human being.
...
This compassion is authority because it does not tolerate the pressures of the in-group, but breaks through the boundaries between languages and countries, rich and poor, educated and illiterate. This compassion pulls people away from the fearful clique into the larger world where they can see that every human face is the face of a neighbor. Thus the authority of compassion is the possibility for each of us to forgive our brothers and sisters, because forgiveness is only real for those who have discovered the weakness of their friends and the sins of their enemies in their own hearts, and are willing to call each human being their sister and brother.
...
This brings us to the final characteristic of Christian leaders. If they are to be not just one in a long row of professionals who try to help people with their specific skills, if they are really to be agents leading from confusion to hope and from chaos to harmony, they must be not only articulate and compassionate, not contemplative at heart as well.
3. The minister as a contemplative critic
... contemporary Christian ministers can in no way be considered those who are concerned only with hepling individuals to adapt themselves to a demanding world. In fact, Christian leaders who are able to be critical contemplatives are revolutionaries in the most real sense. Because by testing all they see, hear, and touch for its evangelical authenticity, they are able to change the course of history and lead their people away from panic-stricken convulsions to the creative action that would make a better world.
They do not shoulder every protest sign in order to be in with those who express their frustrations more than their ideas, nor do they easily join those asking for more protection, more police, more discipline, and more order. But they do look critically at what is going on and make decisions based on insight into their own vocation, not on the desire for popularity or the fear of rejection. They criticise the protesters as well as the rest seekers when their motives are false and their objectives dubious.
Comtemplatives are not needy or greedy for human contact, but are guided by a vision of what they have seen beyond the trivial concerns of a possessive world. They do not bounce up and down with the fashions of the moment, because they are in contact with what is basic, central, and ultimate. ... they constantly invite their fellow human beings to ask real, often painful and upsetting questions, to look behind the surface of charming behavior, and to take away all the obstacles that prevent us from getting to the heart of the matter.
Contemplative critics take away the illusory mask of the manipulative world and have the courage to show what the true situation is. They know that they may be considered to be foolish, mad, a danger to society and a threat to the human race. But they are not afraid to die, since their vision makes them transcend the difference between life and death and makes them free to do what has to be done here and now, notwithstanding the risks involved.
More than anything else, they look for signs of hope and promise if the situation in which they find themselves. Contemplative critics have the sensibility to notice the small mustard seed and the trust to believe that "when it has grown it is the biggest shrub of all and becomes a tree so that the birds of the air come and shelter in its branches (Matt 13:31-32). They know that there is hope for a better world in the future the signs must be visible in the present, and they will never curse the now in favour of the later.

knock knock...
Mel suddenly turned to me after lunch today and said she saw my FB and that i shouldnt...
always hang out with the gals.
but... i am not looking for the guys. If i do wanna get attached, i know where to find all of them.
i am not a keeper.
i dont need to keep someone all for myself.
it freaks me out when someone wants all of my attention...
and i dont wanna give all my attention to only one person.
point being, i am ok with not following the normal cycle of life.
to find one person to love for the rest of my life.
i mean... i cannot imagine anyone wanting to love me for a lifetime.
and i dont know if i can love anyone for a lifetime.
apart of course from the Heavenly Father whose presence i cannot wait to enter for all eternity.
everyone's right, the bar is set too high.
and why should anyone lower theirs for me?
i am happy enough seeing people happy with their other halves...
and i dont wanna deal with the low ebbs of a relationship.
let me be.

Knock knock...
I ask myself this question alot for the last couple of years, "How long?"
How must longer should I remain in this position to fight this war?
"Veni, vidi, vici." ("I came, I saw, I conquered.")
I did come, I have seen. However, I cannot say that I have conquered anything.
What is it that I ought to conquer?

"But Bonhoeffer who taught that "the cross is laid on every Christian" also taught that there are different kinds of dying. Or as the church traditionally put it, there are three kinds of martyrdom - red martyrdom, by blood; green martyrdom, by the exercise of the spiritual disciplines of abstinence, such as fasting; and white martyrdom, by abandoning everything for the love of God. Discipleship therefore means a "white funeral", the funeral of our own independence.

Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away.
3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.
7 Be still before the Lord
and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.
8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
do not fret—it leads only to evil.
9 For those who are evil will be destroyed,
but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.
10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land
and enjoy peace and prosperity.
12 The wicked plot against the righteous
and gnash their teeth at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.
14 The wicked draw the sword
and bend the bow
to bring down the poor and needy,
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.
16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,
but the Lord upholds the righteous.
18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,
and their inheritance will endure forever.
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.
20 But the wicked will perish:
Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.
21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously;
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,
but those he curses will be destroyed.
23 The Lord makes firm the steps
of the one who delights in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,
for the Lord upholds him with his hand.
25 I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or their children begging bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;
their children will be a blessing.
27 Turn from evil and do good;
then you will dwell in the land forever.
28 For the Lord loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones.
Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed;
the offspring of the wicked will perish.
29 The righteous will inherit the land
and dwell in it forever.
30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,
and their tongues speak what is just.
31 The law of their God is in their hearts;
their feet do not slip.
32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous,
intent on putting them to death;
33 but the Lord will not leave them in the power of the wicked
or let them be condemned when brought to trial.
34 Hope in the Lord
and keep his way.
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it.
35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing like a luxuriant native tree,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
though I looked for him, he could not be found.
37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright;
a future awaits those who seek peace.
38 But all sinners will be destroyed;
there will be no future for the wicked.
39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord;
he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

"Before God changes our circumstances, He wants to change our hearts. If our circumstances change for the the better, but we remain the same, then we will become worse. God's purpose in providence is not to make us comfortable, but to make us conformable, "conformed to the image of His Son" (Romans 8:29). Christlike character is the divine goal for each of His children.

thorn in my flesh.
2 Corinthians 12:5-10
5I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. 6Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say.
7To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
9But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.Paul shared this letter with the people in Corinth following a vision that he had. While Paul was there, he faced numerous challenges - false teachers and a church that was plagued with immorality and idolatry. This is not unlike the situation in Singapore where we idolise the latest handphone models and branded goods. We also have to address the issues of false teachers in which the world teaches us that we shd embrace relativism - to embrace the presence of many truths. We're told to be tolerant (say only what they like to hear) to others when we should be loving them. And loving means having to speak the truth so that others may not be blinded by lies and deception.
So when Paul spoke, it was a tremendous task since there would be many to pinpoint, fault and question him. Still, he "boasted" because he knew the truth that he was speaking was not self-motivated and nothing to be ashamed of.
God speaks to each of us in His own way. Many times, He speaks to us personally so that the Word examines our hearts and seek out ways that are displeasing to Him.
It is easy to be complacent when we have heard from God. Sometimes pride swells when our observations resonates with God's heart. During times like these, it is easy to just verbal diarrhoea and speak in self-righteousness. In Paul's case, he spoke the truth as it is - drawing nothing to himself but simply to the Word of God.
Paul was also aware that a thorn in the flesh was inflicted on him. He repeatedly pleaded with God to remove it (3 times). Perhaps this was inflicted so that his self-sufficiency may be eradicated.
God doesn't always yield to the pleas of men so that His grace and power may be shown. Ultimately, God has given us His grace that we may bear it. It would not be beyond what we can bear. So that others may see the work of God; and not be distracted by the workmen instead.
Let's not waste time groaning about the thorn and be debilitated by it.
God has been speaking alot on dependency on Him. So let's boast of His strength and might.
Jeremiah 9:23-2423 This is what the LORD says:"Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD.
